POMEDOR

Residues analysis was carried out on medieval cooking wares from a closed context in Paphos, Cyprus, to see if different food and foodways could be identified in local pots and pans and in cooking wares imported from Frankish Beirut.

... were made by Jean-Jacques Dubernard, a potter operating in Rousillon near Lyon, on the special occasion of the Byzantine dinner organized for POMEDOR final conference.
Jean-Jacques has been working with Lyon laboratory in the past, especially on recreation of Roman pottery.

Replicas of Byzantine White Wares (Impressed White Ware, Shafing Dish...), of the main Middle Byzantine Production (Fine Sgraffito, Aegean Ware, Champlevé, Green and Brown Painted Ware, Slip-Painted Ware), and of Zeuxippus Ware, late sgraffito ware, Port-Saint Symeon Ware were made following archaeological models.

A Byzantine dinner will be created on the occasion of the POMEDOR conference in May, at the Paul Bocuse Institute in Ecully near Lyon (France).

This event is a joint creation by the food historian and experimental archaeologist Sally Grainger, with the scientific advise of Andrew Dalby and of Ilias Anagnostakis, our POMEDOR colleague and friend, historian of Byzantium with an in-depth insight into food and foodways, together with a team of the Bocuse Institute & School, as representatives of the French gastronomy!

Within the rapidly expanding area of research on food and foodways, the medieval eastern Mediterranean is still very much an unexplored area. The aim of the POMEDOR project was to explore this new field in a multidisciplinary way and to stimulate further research. Although the project focused primarily on food and foodways approached through archaeological and archaeometric studies of pottery - from transport amphorae to serving dishes, through food processing utensils, cooking wares, and wares used in food production processes - the conference encompassed a wider field, including historical, archaeozoological, archaeobotanical and anthropological studies.

The introduction of new wares in Western Turkey in the early Turkish period has been one of the subjects investigated in the framework of the POMEDOR project. A paper focusing on moulded wares is now available in preview, which will come out in the special volume of JASReports "Contextualising science: advances in ceramic production, use and function" edited by Roberta Tomber and Michela Spataro:

The final conference of the POMEDOR project "People, Pottery and Food in the Medieval Eastern Mediterranean", funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR), will take place in Lyon on 19-21 May 2016.

 

The conference will give us the opportunity to present the results of the program as well as research on related topics, to discuss recent advances and further research.

A large part of the conference will be devoted to food and foodways as may be approached through archaeological and archaeometric studies of pottery, but research using other approaches will be welcome...

The importance of the main "Middle Byzantine Production" (MBP), which includes several 12-13th c. pottery types known as "Fine sgraffito ware", Aegean Ware" etc., is seen both through its large distribution and by its predominance in 12th-13th c. AD shipwrecks. With the help of chemical analysis, we show in this paper that it was manufactured in Chalcis (Greece), the harbour of wealthy Byzantine Thebes, and later on a Venetian hub under the name of Negroponte. These results question the impact of the Frankish conquest on production and diffusion of goods, and raise issues for future research on consumption and food...
