Aybüke Öztürk will defend her PhD thesis in IT, carried out under the supervision of Stéphane Lallich, Jérôme Darmont and Yona Waksman, on July 9th 2018:

"Design, implementation and analysis of a description model for complex archaeological objects"

Aybüke contributed to the POMEDOR project and to the new design of the ceramics database of Lyon laboratory, which is one of the largest database of chemical data of archaeological ceramics in Europe. The new model includes a full description of pottery samples - text description, drawings, photos of objects and of fabrics under the binocular, 3D models... - together with analytical results - chemical and petrographical analysis... This kind of complex databases, including numerical, text and image data, is becoming increasingly common.

She also developped, together with Stéphane Lallich, models of "committees of clusterers". In these committees, several clusterers may classify the same objects, or categories of objects, according to different citeria. This approach somehow models the dialogue between archaeologists and archaeological scientists.

A meeting organized by the "Databases and reference collections" working group of the CAI-RN network of French archaeological scientists gave the opportunity to present ongoing developments in Lyon's ceramics database, one of the largest European one for chemical data of archaeological ceramics. It is presently extended to 2D images and 3D models, with further developments re. data modeling, mining and sharing:

"Conserver, enrichir, exploiter, interconnecter : développements en cours de la base de données céramologiques de Lyon", S.Y. Waksman

The POMEDOR project is also an opportunity to provide resources for education and research in the field of ceramic studies. 3D scans of complete examples will be taken as representatives for the categories that we studied within the project.
Tests are ongoing on the collection of traditional pottery of the "Laboratoire de Céramologie" in Lyon.

S.Y. Waksman and S. Shabo will go the to Athenian Agora and to Chalkida (Greece) to scan typical examples of the Byzantine amphorae studied within the project. They will work in collaboration with the ACSCA and with G. Vaxevanis, S. Skartsis, N. Kontogiannis (Greek Ministry of Culture), as well as with E. Todorova (Bulgarian Academy of Science, Sofia).

Another 3D scanning campaign will take place in Israel, in collaboration with A. Shapiro and E.J. Stern (Israel Antiquities Authority).

The 3D scans are carried out in the framework of the PALSE-IPEm CERAM.3D project.

... of Marie Delavenne at the "Laboratoire de Céramologie" in Lyon was focusing on the (re)definition of chemical groups, corresponding to late Roman and Medieval pottery productions in the Eastern Mediterranean. These groups in Lyon database will be used as test batches for the interconnections with other ceramics databases, e.g. the one of the Levantine Ceramics Project.
